Apple released its latest smartphone operating system – iOS 18, and most consumers won’t have to fork out hundreds of dollars for a new device to experience all the new features in the latest system software. All iPhone models released in 2018 or later are eligible to update to the new iOS.

The update is already available, and Apple users can simply go to Settings -> General -> About -> Software Update to perform the task. It depends on how good the WiFi network speeds are. But it generally should not take more than twenty minutes to go through the download and installation process and get an iPhone running on the shiny new iOS 18.

Major new features

The new iOS comes with multiple changes, including a password app, improved and redesigned iMessage and Photos apps. And also the ability for users to personalize the iPhone’s home screen.

It also comes with improved privacy features that Apple says will help users manage who can open the iPhone apps and have access to contacts. Apple users will also have more control over how an iPhone connects to accessories. They can also lock apps and folders and even hide folders.

Apple Intelligence

Consumers lucky enough to be rocking with Phone 16 models, Phone 15 Pro, or iPhone 15 Pro Max will soon have a chance to experience Apple Intelligence when iOS 18.1 rolls out. Apple Intelligence is being tested in beta by developers and is expected to become available later this year.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has confirmed that the Apple Intelligence platform will be free to Apple users with eligible devices. Apple’s new AI capabilities are an expected result of the company’s highly publicized system-wide partnership with OpenAI.

Privacy and Security

Apple Intelligence is expected to include writing, image-creating, and emoji-generating tools. The somehow forgotten Apple virtual assistant Siri will also likely benefit from Apple’s good relations with OpenAI. Apple Intelligence will also deliver improvements to the Mail, Photos, and Camera apps.

The new iOS 18 has some handy features already helping Apple users have an even better smartphone experience. Even though iOS provides some privacy and security improvements, having antivirus installed on any iPhone is a must.

Whether users are using one of the latest iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro or running the new iOS 18 on an older version, neglecting privacy and security is a recipe for disaster. It is never too late to get additional protection. Â
